How Can I Customize SEO On My Site?

  1. Check to see if your wordpress.org theme has SEO Settings? If so – click and review and apply changes as you wish.
  2. If your theme doesn’t have SEO Settings – then you are still in luck – WordPress.org‘s amazing plugins (of course!) – install All In One SEO Pack plugin.
    • When you use this plugin – make sure you have the Home Page set the way you want it, Post Title as “%post_title% and Page Title as %page_title% | %blog_title%
    • You may wish to apply “Noindex” to your archives and tag pages – as these are duplicate to the actual blog page.
    • “NoFollow” for your home page full over “Read More” linking to the complete blog posts – then you may want to apply this: within your index.php file

      Look for <a href=”<?php the_permalink() ?>” then simply add “rel=”nofollow”

      <a href=”<?php the_permalink() ?>” “rel=”nonfollow”

  3.  Are your permalinks customized? Change your permalinks to /%postname%/
  4. Does www and non-www work for your website? To test this – type in www.domain.com into your browser – does it go to your site? Then type in domain.com into your browser – does it go to your site? If one of them doesn’t work – then you need to get it setup so it does.Or visit WebsiteGrader.com -
    Permanent Redirect Not Found
    Search engines may think stacijansma.com and www.stacijansma.com are two different sites.You should set up a permanent redirect (technically called a “301 redirect”) between these sites. Once you do that, you will get full search engine credit for your work on these sites.

    With WordPress it should be setup – however it is coded as a 302 and 301 redirect is best.

    • To get this to work for your website you will need to edit your .htaccess file# Begin 301RewriteEngine OnRewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www\.domain\.com [NC]RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.domain.com/$1 [L,R=301]

      # BEGIN WordPress
      <IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
      RewriteEngine On
      RewriteBase /
      RewriteRule ^index\.php$ – [L]
      RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
      RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
      RewriteRule ./index.php [L]
      </IfModule>
      # END WordPress

    If you want to redirect from the www to the non-www then this portion needs to be changed:

    # Begin 301RewriteEngine OnRewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^domain\.com [NC]RewriteRule ^(.*) http://domain.com/$1 [L,R=301]

Do you trust your hosting company?

I recently helped a client with a facebook fan page and they are looking at switching from a HTML website to a WordPress.org website.

I highly recommend anyone that is currently using a HTML website to switch to WordPress.org because in the long run you will be able to take control and edit the pages and even have blog posts that will help drive traffic to your website.

Personally, I have little time to work on SEO and link building for my website – so I just keep adding more value into my blog posts by sharing with my visitors what I have encountered. I know that if I write about what is important to me – that this will help others too.

Continuing why this blog post is so important for you today is can you honestly answer this question: DO YOU TRUST YOUR HOSTING COMPANY?

The hosting company that they have been using gave me 3 immediate reasons to discuss your hosting company might not be for you!

  1. Certificate warning/error before you even sign into the cpanel access.
  2. When I got in – noticed that the website took forever to load. I was sitting there waiting – waiting – waiting – this is crazy!
  3. The WordPress.org version they had was 2.8.4 (I believe!) – HELLO – 3.1 is already out and I know there was even a 2.9. So obviously this hosting company doesn’t update their files/applications.

So – do you trust this hosting company? Also their certificate warning – it expired 03/2010. So seriously – if this is your hosting company – I would be worried.

Do you want to know WHY? If your hosting company is not running the most up-to-date applications/files/software – whatever you want to call it – this allows hackers to get in. Secondly if your passwords are easy to guess – that lets hackers in. Thirdly if you don’t update your WordPress.org to the newest versions along with the plugins – this lets hackers in – do you see a pattern??

Hot New Training: WordPress Powered Membership Site

Know anyone looking for some guidance how to set up a WordPress powered membership site? We just put out the perfect training course for them. Rapid Wishlist Membership Site Development is a video training guide that walks people through how to set up four of the most common membership models online, using WordPress and the Wishlist plugin.

It also includes resources where to obtain a free shopping cart that integrates seamlessly with WordPress and Wishlist. Of course, the videos walk you through how to connect it all.

We released the resource yesterday evening to our subscribers and it’s already sold a number of copies. This is a much requested training with a sweet, budget friendly price. We are sure it will be an easy sale for you. In addition, we also have special pricing in effect. The price goes up by $1 after every five sales until we reach a target price. The sooner you send your friends over, the better chance they have to get the best price (and you lock in the sale).

How To Change WordPress URL Without Moving Or Reinstalling

Courtesy of the folks at TechBasedTraining

Imagine you installed WordPress on a folder named ‘blog’ and you like it so much you want to use it as your main website. Meaning, you want anyone going to yoursite.com to land on the WordPress site. It is actually super easy to do and you don’t have to re-install or manually move the whole installation. This checklist walks you through the steps you need to take.

1. Prepare The Index File

Download or copy the original index.php from WordPress onto your computer. If you want you can temporarily re-name it to wpindex.php.
Open the file and edit the line that says require(‘…’) make sure this points to the right place in this example, WordPress is installed in /public_html/blog so you’ll want to make it require (‘blog/wpblog-header.php’);
If you installed WordPress in a folder with another name you will need to adjust the path accordingly
Save this file
Upload it to your /public_html/ or /www/ folder.

2. Log In To WordPress Admin

Navigate to Settings >> General.
One of the options there are WordPress Address and Blog Address.
Change the Blog Address from http://www.yoursite.com/blog to http://www.yoursite.com
Do not change the WordPress Address
Save

3. Rename The Index

Log in to your site via FTP or your web hosts’ file manager.
Rename your existing index.html/index.php etc – whatever your home page is to another name – this will take your home page down.
Rename wpindex.php (the file we edited and uploaded earlier) to index.php

4. Visit Your Website In A Browser

Refresh so you will see the changes. If you don’t see it on the first refresh, try a couple of refreshes or clear your browser cache then visit your site again Your home page should now be the WordPress home page

Tip #1: You can use this same method to work in private mode. For example, if you have a live site and do not want to interfere with it, you can install it into a special folder and switch using the above steps when you’re ready.

Tip #2: You can also do this in reverse. For example, install WordPress in /public_html/ or /www/ folder then make it appear in /blog/ or /whateverfoldername/. Just follow the same steps.
