Quoting from Twitter.com website:
Why 140 characters?
SMS (i.e., texting on your phone) limits each message to 160 characters. Twitter takes that limit and reserves 20 characters for your username, leaving you 140 characters to play with. That’s how it started and we’ve stuck with it!
Thought that was interesting – HAD TO SHARE!! So that is the reason for only 140-characters!

Email from Twitter – Password Change Request
This morning I woke up to see an email message in my inbox from Twitter.com. Was not surprised to see an email since I have been getting more followers each day. However this email was not from a followers, it was Twitter – stating my account needs a password change due to possible phishing.
So not only did I change Twitter, but I went through and updated all of my accounts with new passwords.
If you are wondering how you can create passwords within seconds for each of your accounts – my secret is …
I used Security Scan plug-in that is installed on my WordPress website. Within the plugin you can use the password generator tool.
So there you go! One of my secrets for you to use.
Let me know what you think about it…
